AC Installation & Replacement in Las Vegas

A new air conditioner is a big purchase, and in Las Vegas it's one you'll lean on for most of the year. We size, install and replace central air conditioners and heat pumps so they keep up with desert summers without wasting energy.

When replacement makes sense

  • The system is roughly 12 to 15 years old or more and needs a major repair such as a compressor
  • It uses R-22 refrigerant, which is no longer produced, so recharging it is increasingly expensive
  • Repairs are becoming a yearly event
  • It can't keep the house comfortable on the hottest days, even when it's working
  • Your electric bills keep climbing

Sizing matters

Bigger isn't better. An oversized system cools the house fast, shuts off, and never runs long enough to cool evenly. An undersized system runs nonstop in July. The right size depends on square footage, insulation, windows and sun exposure, ceiling height and ductwork, not just the size of the old unit.

What an installation includes

  • A load assessment to size the system correctly
  • Removal and haul-away of the old equipment
  • New outdoor and indoor equipment, refrigerant lines as needed, and a new pad or mounting
  • A check of the ductwork, since leaky or undersized ducts can undo a new system
  • Electrical disconnect and thermostat connections, and a new thermostat if needed
  • Condensate drain routing, startup, and a performance check
  • Permits where required

Heat pump or AC plus furnace?

Many Las Vegas homes use a heat pump, which cools in summer and heats in winter with one outdoor unit. Others have an AC with a gas furnace. Our heat pump vs. gas furnace guide explains the trade-offs for our climate.

Efficiency standards

Federal efficiency minimums for new air conditioners and heat pumps rose in 2023, and the Southwest, including Nevada, has additional requirements for central air. Newer systems are also moving to new refrigerants. We'll explain the options that meet current rules for your home.

Install details that matter in the desert

Attic air handlers and line set insulation

In many valley homes the indoor unit sits in an attic that can get dramatically hotter than outside air. Refrigerant line insulation that's cracked or missing in that heat costs capacity before cool air ever reaches a room. On a replacement we check the line set and replace or re-insulate it when needed, along with the drain pan and float switch.

Matching the indoor coil to the outdoor unit

A new condenser paired with an old indoor coil can mean reduced efficiency, the wrong refrigerant, or a coil that's already near the end of its life. Systems are rated as matched sets, so in most cases both sides should be replaced together. We'll explain if your existing air handler or furnace can stay and why.

Variable-speed and two-stage systems

Single-stage systems run full blast or not at all. Two-stage and variable-speed systems run at lower output most of the time, which means longer, quieter cycles, better humidity control and more even temperatures in two-story homes. They cost more up front. Whether the extra comfort is worth it depends on the house and how long you plan to stay.

Scheduling a replacement before peak summer

Replacement work is easiest to schedule in spring and fall, when systems aren't failing all over town. If your system is on its last legs, planning ahead gives you time to compare options rather than deciding during a July breakdown. A spring tune-up can tell you how much life the current system has left.

Common questions

How long does AC replacement take?

Most straightforward replacements take a day. Jobs that need ductwork changes or relocating equipment can take longer.

How long does an air conditioner last in Las Vegas?

Central air systems commonly last around 10 to 15 years. Heavy use in desert heat and skipped maintenance can shorten that.

Should I replace my furnace at the same time?

Not always. If the furnace or air handler is fairly new and compatible, it may not need replacing. We'll check it and tell you.

Do you remove the old unit?

Yes. Removal and haul-away of the old equipment is included.
