What a tune-up includes
- Cleaning the outdoor condenser coil and checking the fan
- Testing capacitors, contactors and electrical connections
- Checking refrigerant pressures and temperature split
- Inspecting the indoor coil and blower
- Flushing the condensate drain line and checking the safety float switch
- Replacing or checking the air filter
- Checking thermostat operation
- A written note of anything that's wearing out, so there are no surprises
When to schedule
The best time is spring, before temperatures climb into the triple digits and every HVAC company in town is busy. Heat pumps benefit from a second check in the fall, before heating season.
Filters in the desert
Dust is the biggest enemy of AC systems in Las Vegas. A clogged filter restricts airflow, which can freeze the coil, overwork the blower and raise your bill. See how often to change your AC filter in Las Vegas.
Things you can do between visits
- Keep 2 feet of clear space around the outdoor unit
- Rinse loose dust off the outdoor coil gently with a hose (power off first)
- Keep supply and return vents open and unblocked
- Watch for water around the indoor unit
Desert-specific maintenance problems
Cottonwood fluff and dust packed in condenser fins
Spring brings cottonwood seed fluff in some neighborhoods, and dust storms coat outdoor coils year-round. When the fins clog, the condenser can't shed heat, head pressure climbs and the compressor works harder. A coil that looks clean on the outside can be packed inside, which is why we clean from the inside out during a tune-up.
Capacitors weakened by summer heat
Run and start capacitors sit in a metal box that bakes in direct sun on 110-degree days, and heat shortens their life. A weak capacitor can let the system limp along until it finally won't start. Testing capacitance during a tune-up catches one that's drifting out of range before it strands you on the hottest afternoon of the year.
Rooftop and side-yard unit access
Some homes have package units on the roof, and many side-yard condensers are tucked behind gates or wedged between walls. Tight spaces trap heat and block airflow. Keeping two feet clear around the unit matters even more when it sits next to a block wall. Units that recirculate their own hot air are covered on our AC repair page.
Fall heat pump check before winter
A heat pump that cooled all summer now has to heat. A fall visit checks the reversing valve, defrost controls and backup heat strips before the first cold morning. Catching a problem in October is easier than waiting for a January call. See our heat pump repair page for the issues that come up most.
Common questions
How often should an AC be serviced in Las Vegas?
Once a year, ideally in spring. Heat pumps, which run for both heating and cooling, benefit from a check in spring and fall.
Does a tune-up lower my electric bill?
A clean, properly charged system with good airflow uses less energy than a dirty one. How much you save depends on the condition of the system.
Do you replace filters during maintenance?
Yes. We check the filter and replace it if needed, and can tell you the right size and type for your system.
