Thermostat installation
We install programmable and Wi-Fi smart thermostats and make sure they're configured for your equipment. Heat pumps in particular need the correct settings for the reversing valve and backup heat, or the system can run expensive electric heat when it doesn't need to.
Thermostat repair and troubleshooting
- Blank screen or dead batteries
- System won't turn on, or won't turn off
- Temperature readings that don't match the room
- Short-cycling
- No power to a smart thermostat (often a missing common wire)
Where the thermostat is placed matters
A thermostat in direct sun, near a kitchen or above a supply vent reads the wrong temperature. If yours is in a bad spot, we can recommend a better location.

Summer setpoints and pre-cooling
On long triple-digit stretches, letting the house climb many degrees during the day and then cooling it back down in the evening can leave the system running for hours without catching up. Smaller setbacks, or cooling the house a bit more in the morning before the afternoon peak, are often more comfortable. A programmable thermostat makes that routine automatic.
Wi-Fi thermostats for rentals and second homes
Smart thermostats let you check a vacant home or rental from your phone and get alerts if the temperature climbs too high in summer. That's useful when an AC failure in an empty house could mean damage from heat. We confirm the wiring supports a smart thermostat before installing, since some need a common wire.
Zoned systems in two-story homes
Some two-story homes have one thermostat per floor and dampers in the ductwork. If one floor never seems to get conditioned, a damper motor or zone panel may have failed. We test the zone controls along with the thermostats. Zoning problems sometimes look like duct issues, which our duct repair page covers.
Thermostat wiring after an equipment change
When a gas furnace is replaced with a heat pump, or an AC with a heat pump, the thermostat wiring and settings change too. A thermostat left on the wrong configuration can run backup heat constantly or fail to switch modes. We set it up correctly as part of heating installation.
Common questions
Will a smart thermostat work with my system?
Most do, but some need a common wire or an adapter. We'll check your wiring and equipment first.
Why does my thermostat say "aux heat"?
On a heat pump, auxiliary heat is the backup electric heat. Seeing it now and then is normal; seeing it constantly can point to a setup or system problem.
